Criteria for MBBS/BDS or equivalent degree for abroad study.

The Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has decided to make entrance examination mandatory for students who want to study medicine at a foreign university. All the Nepalese students who want to go abroad for the study of MBBS/BDS or equivalent degree must pass the entrance exam conducted by Tribhuvan University institute of Medicine or Kathmandu University or BPKIHS Dharan or Patan Academy of Health Sciences or Ministry of Education. The passed result will be valid for a period of two years from the passed date.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the mandate and the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country. Within the first decade of its establishment. it developed a total of 12 campuses scattered over the country out of which 3 campuses were in Kathmandu and 9 campuses were outside the Kathmandu Valley.

Criteria for Tribhuvan university

Completed +2 level in Science (Biology Group) or equivalent, with English, Biology, Physics and Chemistry as main subjects. Minimum of 50% marks in aggregate in 10+2 or equivalent and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

Eligible candidates desirous of pursuing MBBS program must take the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine, TU. & should qualify for that particular academic year.

All students including international students must take and pass the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by Institute of Medicine.

There is no provision of age bar.

Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences (KUSMS) is an institution established in collaboration between Kathmandu University and Dhulikhel Hospital. KUSMS launched its own constituent MBBS program in August 2001. The school has infrastructure and physical facilities at two locations: basic science building with all the required facilities is situated at a hilltop at Chaukot in the Panauti area and the university hospital is situated at Dhulikhel, within a distance of 3 km. Basic science department has various departments with the required number of laboratories, lecture halls including PBL class rooms, audio visual facilities (media tech.), library with 24 hour Internet facility.

Eligibility criteria for Kathmandu University

Completed +2 level in Science or equivalent with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

OR

Completed Bachelor of Science Degree (B.Sc.), recognized by the University, with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and having scored not less than an overall aggregate of (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

OR

Completed 17 years of age and Completed requisite course equivalent to +2 Science (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute,Kathmandu University and having minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB).

AND

The age of Candidate must be 17 years on or before 31st December, of the year admission to the MBBS course.

B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was established on Jan 18, 1993 and subsequently upgraded as an autonomous Health Sciences University on Oct 28, 1998 with a mandate to work towards developing socially responsible and competent health workforce, providing health care & involving in innovative health research. The Institute, located in Eastern Nepal, has extended its continued health services through teaching district concept to Primary Health Care Centers, District Hospitals and Zonal Hospitals in different districts of the region.

Note: Candidates from institutions following Grade System must get the certified equivalence marks percentage for their grades.

The Patan Academy of Health Sciences is a public not-for-profit tertiary academic institution dedicated to improving Nepal’s rural health by training health workers for rural Nepal. The goal of PAHS is that its graduates will not only provide severely needed medical care in rural Nepal, but will also eventually become leaders in health care policy, dedicated to improving the health of the remote and destitute populations in Nepal. Furthermore, PAHS will serve as a model of innovative medical education in a developing country, which can be replicated elsewhere

Eligibility criteria for Patan Academy

The applicant must be a Nepalese Citizen.

Must have passed +2 or equivalent qualifications with Science or health science (General Medicine/HA, Medical Lab Technology, Ophthalmic Science, Dental Science, Pharmacy) background from institutions recognized by Universities/Board of Nepal having passed Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) with a minimum of 50% in each subject and also in aggregate.

In addition to the above criteria context of the applicant with Health Science background in Proficiency level he/she should have valid Level 2 (“Kha”) registration from Nepal Health Professional Council and in case of applicants who have done PCL in Pharmacy, Registration should be with Nepal Pharmacy council.

Candidates from health science background must have passed “Bridge Course” from Higher Secondary Education Board/National Examination Board securing a minimum of 50% in PCB.

The age of Candidate must be 17 years on or before 31st December, of the year admission to the MBBS course.

Entrance Exam Pattern

The Entrance Examination will consist of written examination which will comprise of:

Paper I: Multiple choice questions (MCQs) on Science
(Physics, Chemistry & Biology)

Paper II: Mental Agility test (MAT)

Paper III: Situational Judgment Tests (SJT)

Obtain Entrance Exam Pass Certificate (Score Card) from respective university

The applicants scoring less than 50% in Science test (Paper I) will be considered ‘fail’ and applicants falling below Two (2) Standard Deviation in Aptitude tests (MAT and SJT) will be considered ‘fail’.
